Habibi's Sacrament of Confirmation

If not for our impending marriage, habibi might not have received this Sacrament at all. My initial reaction was disbelief. I never thought that ANYONE could have reached that age and not have received the Sacrament yet. This was such a stupid thing to think after all. I came to learn later on that this was the norm for most grooms (geez!). I was even teasing him that he will be the oldest during the Confirmation Rite. I could never be more wrong. He told me that most of the “confirmees” were even older than him. So it’s definitely okay. There’s no need to fret if you are in the same boat as habibi once was.

Unlike my experience, getting the Sacrament here in St. Mary’s can somehow be considered tedious. Habibi was required to attend 10 consecutive Thursdays of seminar. If you come to think of it, that’s equivalent to 2 and a half months! Some of our friends advised us that we should have gone to Recto instead. We could have a certificate ready within minutes. No regrets though. There’s no better way than to do everything legally. Nobody can tell what negative consequences cheating might bring hehe.

I noticed there’s no section in St. Mary’s website for the complete instructions of the procedure for Confirmation. Hopefully I can help with that:

1-Get registered. Visit their office and inquire about the available slots/timings.

2-Attend the 10-Thursdays of seminar. Make sure you get to sign EVERYTIME on the attendance sheet.

3-Pay attention to the announcement regarding the exact date of the confirmation rite. You wouldn’t want to miss this after months of preparation.

4-You need to bring along with you a guardian; someone to play the role of a “ninong” or “ninang” during the ceremony. The confirmation rite usually falls on Thursday evening which happens to be a working day so better make the necessary arrangements as soon as you know the exact date.

5-Take the copy of your certificate which is immediately distributed after the ceremonial rite. CAREFULLY check the details for any errors. I’m glad habibi did as we found out there’s a mistake in the baptismal date. We informed the officer-in-charge and we got the correct copy after a week.

6-Request for another copy marked “for marriage purposes” as this will be the one required for submission.

Happy Kumpil!
